Quotes:
“Mortenson couldn’t ever imagine discharging the dept he felt to his hosts in Korphe.” Pg 30
Mortenson says this right after he learns that Twaha, one of his hosts has had a horrible past. This is when Mortenson begins to give things away in order to help others. He gives his jacket away, along with Nalgene bottles, flashlights, and a camping stove. Although these things help, his medical kit was most valuable. He began helping people with broken bones and giving them antibiotics to get better and soon after people even on the outskirts were sending for “Dr. Greg”.

“There was much more meaningful gestures he could make in honor of his sister.” Pg 33
With this quote it is basically saying that he could do better and that leaving the necklace on the mountain was not meant to be. When Mortenson does not make it up the mountain first he was mad at himself because he was not able to leave his sisters necklace, but then he realizes that the K2 was beside the point and there was much more he could do for her. He realizes this when he is in Korphe and there are no schools for the children, and they cannot afford teacher just for their town.

“He patted the big burgundy hood, pocketed the money, and carried his duffle bag toward the taxi waiting to take him to the next chapter of his life.” Pg 56
Mortenson has finally gotten the money he needs. The money came specifically from a man Dr. Jean Hoerni and little things that Mortenson had sold. After writing 580 letters and several of them getting rejected he finally got the money and was heading the Pakistan. Mortenson was beginning the new chapter in his life, which was him building this school.

Quotes: “On Sunday, April 6, with American ground forces massing on the outskirts of Baghdad, fighting their way into position for the final assault on Saddam Hussein’s capital, 34 million copies of a magazine with Mortenson’s picture on the cover and the headline declaring ‘He Fights Terror With Books’ saturated the nation’s newspapers. Never had Mortenson reached so many people at a critical time” (Mortenson 301).
Finally Greg was being noticed all over the country and people were donating. Because on such donations that Greg got he was able to further his mission and give more to the people and build more schools. Mortenson had gotten several letters from people everywhere and finally got his business up and going.

“…Tara Bishop’s calm endurance is every bit heroic as the risks her husband takes over seas… Tara not only allows it, but supports it, because she believes so strongly in Greg’s mission. If that’s not heroism I don’t know what is” (Christiane Letinger 304).
It was nice to see that Tara was also being seen and complicated. I am sure that it would be impossible for Greg to do his missions if his wife did not support him. I could imagine that Tara lives in the background of Greg’s accomplishments and it is good to hear that she too is noticed.
